Guest Bath Renovation Mood Board

So. We are taking the plunge. We have called a local contractor to help us renovate our guest bathroom! Here’s a reminder of why this is necessary: before guest

And also, this is our view from the bottom of the stairs:

SONY DSCNot exactly the nicest view for our guests (that’s the bathroom door on the left), but rather than keep the door closed all the time, we just decided to renovate! Ok, not really, and in all seriousness we actually think the olive green is kind of charming (colored tubs might be on their way back in, after all), and everything functions perfectly fine. However, the finish on the tub is mostly worn off, and soap sticks to it like nobody’s business. It is such a bear to clean. Plus, there’s no exhaust fan, so we knew at the very least we would need to take care of that issue. Showering with the door open might not be the best option for guests… Everything else is the bathroom isn’t done terribly well, and there are places where dust and dirt are just so caked on, there’s no getting it off. The story in here is the same as most of the rest of the house- things haven’t been all that well taken care of, and anything that’s been updated has been done poorly. I mean, they just slapped that stupid linoleum on top of the old tile (maybe it will be chic and vintage and we can rescue it???) and it’s been brown (as opposed to the natural white) since before we moved in. So, since this is our guest bathroom and gets the most use out of all of our bathrooms, we thought it was time to renovate! We are trying to save money on the process by doing some of the demo ourselves, keeping everything where it is and leaving things intact. We are just waiting to hear back from the contractor so we can finalize our choices and budget. We hope to get started sometime in May, and I plan to keep you posted throughout the process. In the meantime, here is a moodboard with most of our final design choices! (Click the image below to enlarge).White Bathroom Makeover

As you can see, we have gone with mostly white (although we might paint the vanity at some point- (that’s what that navy blue square is at the bottom of the vanity)) and basic in this bathroom. We want to keep everything classic, so it doesn’t look dated a few years down the road. We also debated about the finishes- brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, brass, MIXED METALS!- but we ultimately decided that the brushed nickel would be a more classic look, so that’s what we went with throughout. I love how clean and modern it looks, while still being classic.

1. Moen Ashville Tub and Shower Fixtures- We have looked at tons of fixtures, and ultimately picked one that had the brushed nickel finish, looked somewhat modern, had decent reviews and wasn’t a gazillion dollars. We think this guy definitely fits the bill. I am also considering purchasing this arm to give the showerhead a slightly more modern look.

2. Basic White Subway Tile- I am not even going to link to this, because you can get it everywhere, and we will probably just snag it at Home Depot or Lowes (whichever is cheaper). But we plan to run it all the way to the ceiling around the tub, and then at chair rail height around the rest of the room (budget permitting). This should allow for easy cleaning… We are thinking about a medium gray grout that will tie into the floors (see #8).

3. Kohler Cimarron Comfort Height Toilet- We debated between this one and the American Standard Champion, which we still might go with. We went for something a little higher-end, because, if you ask me, the toilet is basically the most important part of the bathroom. We are considering this “comfort height” one (a few inches taller) because Rich’s parents raved about theirs. As a short person, I don’t know if that sounds so great, but I don’t use this bathroom very often.

4. West Elm Stripe Border Shower Curtain- I think the stripes are clean and classic- exactly what we are going for in this bathroom!

5. Delta Trinsic Toilet Paper Holder- We liked the slightly more modern look of this toilet paper holder. It ties in well to the vanity fixtures (see #13). The only thing is, it’s $43, so we may end up going with something cheaper.

6. Schoolhouse Electric Hooks- We plan to use 4 of these hooks so we have plenty of places to hang towels.

7. Plum and Bow Bathmat- This bathmat ties in with the shower curtain and gives the room a laid back feel.

8. Tile Shop 12×24 Porcelain Floor Tile- I couldn’t find a link to the exact tile we picked out in the the store, but it’s a gray “marble” tile. I really wanted actual marble, and since the room is so small it was maybe going to be in our budget, but after extensive research, we decided it just isn’t practical. This bathroom gets the most use, and marble really has to be babied. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to even consider something that was just pretending to be marble, but we brought some samples home and I think I like our choice! We plan to do a medium gray grout that will blend in well and be easy to clean.

9. Nice Space Lapiz Hand Towels- We already have some nice gray bath towels, but I thought these Turkish-style hand towels would bring a fun element while also playing off of the shower curtain.

10. Minted.com Art- I definitely think we will be able to find some great art on Minted.com! This will be our way to bring in some color to the room (which can always be changed down the road if we want a different look).

11. Shades of Light Fresnel Glass Restoration Light- I gave Rich a few light options and this was the one he picked (we plan to get the antique nickel finish). We decided to keep the single light above the vanity to save money, but I think this will be substantial enough to light up the whole vanity area.

12. Pottery Barn Eleanor Mirrors- I think these mirrors are so modern, yet timeless at the same time! I just love them! And since we plan to convert to a double vanity (see #13), the space will look just perfect with two of them!

13. Ikea Odensvik Sink, Godmorgon Vanity and Dalskar Faucets- After much thought, I decided I definitely wanted to have 2 sinks in this bathroom. Since it’s our guest bathroom, which will also be used by any children we might have in the future, I thought it would be good if we could squeeze two sinks in here. After much research, the Ikea product was the only one I found that would fit (that wasn’t custom). It’s only 3 inches larger than our current vanity, and there’s TONS of space in those drawers. We checked everything out at Ikea the other day, and it all seems sturdy and super functional! It’s also a much cheaper option than any other vanity we looked at- what a great combo!

14. Pottery Barn Boulevard 6″ Drawer Pulls- I really liked the look of these in brass, but it just didn’t fit with the rest of our plans, so we are going for the satin nickel finish. I think they will really elevate the vanity from “cheesy, cheap-looking Ikea” to “chic and custom”.

15. Tablelegs.com McCobb Mid-Century Modern Legs- We plan to get the 10″ legs (not sure what type of wood yet, but probably lighter than what’s in the moodboard) with nickel caps. Again, I think this will really elevate the vanity and fool people into thinking it couldn’t possibly be from Ikea!

16. Exquisite 3-Shelf Tension Pole- We are thinking of getting this tension pole as non-destructive bathtub storage. We are still debating whether or not to get a towel bar or soap niche (is that a thing??) put in, but that would require drilling into the tile and/or building the niche. I don’t really like the look of the caddies that hang from the shower head- but if anyone has any other ideas for how to store soap/shampoo in the bathtub they would be greatly appreciated!
